FAQs

Access to Autism for Parents, Working in Partnership with Parents, Learning Theory, SEND CoP and Understanding ADHD is free. We charge a small administration fee for producing digital certificates of completion for these courses, which is £16 per course.

Close

Typically, our paid courses run for three months with access to the learning content for a further nine months. Therefore, you have a total of 12 months access to our learning content.

Close

Our paid courses are designed to help you apply theory to practice through a balance of activities that help you understand what it feels like to have a special need, learn how to identify a student’s needs, and how to intervene to achieve specific learning outcomes.

To complete the course you must identify the key learning points in our end of section quizzes. Read 100% of the course content and complete a SEND support plan for a case study in your school/organisation. Finally, you are expected to attend at least 2 face to face or virtual training sessions and reflect on your practice in course and/or public forums.

Close

To pass our free short courses and qualify for a certificate of completion, participants must achieve at least 7/10 (or 70%) pass in the end of course quiz. You can choose to purchase a certificate of completion for £16.

An essential part of our learning model is to blend independent study with the support of a SEND expert tutor. Our experienced tutors help you to reflect on your current practice and share useful inclusive strategies (and experiences) for supporting young people with SEND. The learning dialogue between you and the tutor is a powerful way to clarify questions and enhance your teaching practice.

FAQs

The main differences between the Pay As You Go (PAYG) and the Delivery Partner options are the level of access to our courses, the number of places procured and whether the course is delivered by OLT or your in-house staff.

PAYG Members purchase places on one or more courses from our training catalogue. They can opt to use an in-house specialist to tutor their courses and/or enrol participants on a course that is delivered by one of OLT’s associate tutors.

By contrast, our Delivery Partner 12-month Membership option gives organisations unlimited places on all (or just our sensory) courses, which Delivery Partners deliver without the support of an OLT Associate tutor. Delivery Partners are also assigned a learning and engagement manager, who helps them achieve the best value for money from their membership.

Both organisation Membership types receive additional benefits when they join OLT’s learning community. These benefits include free access to and certification for all Open and Short Courses in addition to the SEND Practice Webinars, access to the Teacher’s Toolkit of resources and tools, and places on our Annual Conference starting in 2021.

All Membership Plans to our learning community last for 12-months. Pay As You Go Membership Plans commence (or are extended) when you make a purchase. Delivery Partner Memberships commence from the date the Tutor Training session has concluded.

Close

When you become a Delivery Partner you have greater control over how you run our courses. Delivery Partners use our comprehensive education solution as a resource to train staff internally, and/or as part of a traded service for training non-member organisations.

Our one stop educational solution consists of quality educational content, discussion forums and additional learning content (such as webinars and a resource library). Our learning management system provides organisational leads with dynamic and real time monitoring and evaluation tools to determine the level of usage and training impact.

Close

A learning and engagement manager provides regular support to help Delivery Partners get the best value from their membership. A Tutor Training session for up to 12 participants is included in the Membership fee. This session covers information about using our learning management system and awareness of relevant digital learning pedagogies to increase participation in and the completion of our Member Courses. A responsive support ticketing system is also available to resolve operational issues usually within a 24 to 48-hour timeframe, depending on the service request.

Close

For organisations opting to deliver our Member Courses with their own in-house tutors, a Tutor Training session for a maximum of 12 people is provided at a cost of £350 (excl. VAT). A responsive support ticketing system is also available to resolve operational issues usually within a 24 to 48-hour timeframe, depending on the service request.

The number on roll in a school or the 0-19 population in a local authority/large organisation is used to determine the cost of a Membership based on the potential usage and resulting impact on all students (including those with SEND needs). One London-based Delivery Partner has achieved a cost of £13.50 (excl. VAT) per place from their 2019/20 Membership.

We have high expectations of our Pay As You Go/Delivery Partner in-house tutors. So, to qualify as an online tutor, we require all prospective tutors to:

  • Be qualified and experienced teachers, or other professionals such as educational psychologists, speech therapists, or other health professionals.
  • Under our agreement with NatSIP only teaching professionals holding a relevant qualification are eligible for Tutor Training to deliver our sensory courses. These tutors are qualified Teachers of the Deaf (TOD), Qualified Teacher of the Visually Impaired (QTVI) and/or Qualified Teachers of children with Multi-Sensory Impairment (QTMSI).
  • complete 100% of the Member Course, which relates to their professional experience and training delivery plans, and:
  • attend a Tutor Training session to comprehend OLT’s standard for learning and assessment and how to use our learning management system. Subsequent Tutor Training is delivered by OLT for a charge of £350 (excl. VAT) per session.

Our Member Courses are designed to apply theory to practice through a balanced mix of formative and summative assessment activities, which help participants understand the nature of the special need in question, to learn how to assess a student’s needs, and how to intervene to achieve specific learning goals.

There are formative quizzes at the end of each section to review the key learning points. Participants must also read 100% of the course content, complete a SEND support plan for a case study from their organisation and make reflective contributions to a course and/or public forum. The support plan consists of SMART goals and interventions, which participants evaluate after the course has finished. All of this is achieved with the guidance and support of an expert tutor.

OLT’s comprehensive educational solution consists of quality educational content, monitoring and evaluation tools, customisable discussion forums, additional learning content (such as webinars and a resource library) and videoconferencing/chat for running remote training sessions. When you become a member you also have access to a very talented community of expert tutors/practitioners in SEND.

All Member Courses receive two certificates: OLT’s Certificate of Completion and CPD UK certification for 20 hours learning. These certificates are provided for free as part of your Membership.

This course has really opened my eyes to children, the way they move, and organise themselves in the school environment. On learning walks around school, I now see with fresh eyes. I am able to contribute to discussions with the SENCO now about the nature of the difficulties some children experience. I would like the SEND governors I meet to undertake any of the OLT courses. They are invaluable to all colleagues working in school. Great networking opportunities! I also made contact with the local Physio and OT team on behalf of school.

Before starting this course, I had no knowledge of Dyslexia. I thought it was just a case of "swimming letters" and confusing b and d, p and q when writing. I now realise that there is much more to it than just these traits! I have learnt the importance of a Dyslexia Friendly Classroom. When we try to make our classrooms as appealing as possible for the majority of our students sometimes, we fail to take into account the needs of a student with Dyslexia. Something as simple as changing the background from white to buff on the Smartboard and labelling trays with images rather than just words can save everybody time, not just our struggling students. It is useful to revisit the different sections and read the information. I can now see how I can use the course materials with staff in the Service, develop their understanding of the impact of a visual impairment, and share their knowledge with staff in schools. I believe this will help them, as they work with children and young people (CYP) with SEND, to support CYP more effectively and set goals that look at the child's academic, social, and independence skills. We are always striving to help a child become an independent young person and I believe OLT’s course will help staff focus on the skills needed to enable this to happen.
